Real Warriors don't need Macs Factor

Real Warriors don't need Macs Factor.. The 7 a side soccer tournament run by Mullinahone A.F.C. in conjunction with the Richard Quirke Support Fund has commenced. Local young man Richie is making progress having received very serious injuries during a night out in Kilkenny at the end of last October. The next stage of Richie's rehabilitation will involve extensive treatment in Dun Laoghaire or more probably in Bath in England.

The Support Fund was set up towards this end and they have ran a number of events over the last number of months. Well done to our soccer club for coming on board. The revival of the old tournament was most successful with each player taking part making a contribution of 10 euro to the fund. It makes a change hearing of players paying to play rather than looking for pay to play. Well done to all who signed up to take part, be they 15 or 50.

The tournament itself began on Thursday evening. Four games were played involving all eight competing teams. On Friday evening all teams played another round of games. This time the weather was much finer and the crowd of spectators much bigger. Saturday evening was the final evening for group games. At the end of the evening the winners and runners up in each section progressed to the tournament semi-finals. The four sides were Macs Factor, Frannies School of Excellence, The Warriors and Dinny's Demons.

In the semi-finals on Sunday evening Macs Factor were too well groomed for the School of Excellence while the Warriors were too fierce for Dinny's Demons. In the final the Warriors wiped the smile from the faces of Macs Factor.

The brief appearance of Richie Quirke himself raised everybodys spirits. Well done to all concerned. T.J. Mac sponsored medals for winners and runners up while there were a couple of individual awards as well.

The team panels of the semi-finalists were:

The Warriors Michael Lonergan, Johnny Kennedy, Kevin Foxe, Noel Leahy, Dan Croke, Declan McNamara, Adrian Maher, Niall Curran, Alan Cronin, Mick O'Brien, Dominic Crowe, Jed O'Brien, Denis Connolly and Pat Carroll.

Mullinahone 4 Dundrum 3 (Munster Junior Cup)

Report Provided By Adrian Doheny

Mullinahone and Dundrum both came into this game with 100% records in their respectieve divisions so both teams fancied their chances of advancing, with Mullinahone looking for revenge for their defeat to Dundrum in their previous meeting in the FAI Cup. Dundrum started brightly when they counter-attacked at pace to go 1-0 up inside the opening minutes.

Mullinahone responded with a pin-point ball over the top from Adrian Doheny to Joe Tracey who cleverly lobbed the keeper. This was followed by a good spell by the home side but they conceded a penalty and went 2-1 down against the run of play. They again came up with the right answer when a textbook missle throw from Shane O Brien was flicked on by Mick O'Brien and Adrian Doheny made no mistake volleying to the net to leave it 2-2 at the break.

The Mullinahone gaffer made some unavoidable changes at half time but this did not affect the team as they went 3-2 in front mid-way through the second half, Tony Waters kepping up his impressive 100% record from the spot. Dundrum rallied and got one back but the tie was made safe when an Ian Gahan Free-Kick from distance went all the way to the net.

Redmondstown 4 Mullinahone 5

Mullinahone came from two goals down as they produced a remarkable recovery to Redmondstown by the odd goal in nine in this Shield Division Three quarter-final in Clonmel last Sunday

Redmondstown, who were saved from relegation last season due to adjustments in the league, got the breakthrough after 10 minutes when John Shoer scored. They doubled that lead with a Declan O’Brien goal after 15 minutes.

Mullinahone replied with a Joe Tracey goal after 32 minutes but Redmondstown went in at the break leading 3-1 following a Paul Dempsey goal after 43 minutes. Mullinahone reduced the deficit with a A.J Cronin goal after 49 minutes, only for Redmondstown to respond with a goal from Jessie Cummins after 60 minutes to make It 4-2.

However things went pear-shaped for Redmondstown shortly afterwards when they had a player sent off, and Mullinahone put their numerical advantage to good use with Michael O’Brien scoring 70 minutes.

They then got the equalizer with an Aidan Doheny goal after 80 minutes, and in a dramatic finale Mullinahone completed their recovery with the winning goal from a Niall Cronin penalty after minutes.
